Gmail Chat - New Google Service Merges Gmail With IM

Gmail Chat - new Google service merges Gmail with IM
Posted by Richard MacManus @ 8:35 pm
The NY Times is reporting that Google will announce a new service this Tuesday called Gmail Chat, which will join its instant-messaging service with Gmail. They state:
"The new program, called Gmail Chat, will let Gmail users exchange text messages with others without having to log onto a separate chat program, making instant messaging simpler and more integrated with the e-mail program.
From anywhere in Gmail, the user can see who is available to chat. The program will also allow users to store instant-message conversations."
It will be interoperable with some smaller IM services, like Jabber and EarthLink, but none of the larger ones like AOL, Yahoo or MSN.
Google's vice president for product management, Salar Kamangar, is quoted by the Times as saying Gmail Chat will be available Tuesday to "an unspecified number of Gmail users, and to all users of the system by the end of February."
"Gmail Chat builds on the company's earlier instant-messaging technology, called GoogleTalk, which it announced in August. That program, which will still be available, allows GoogleTalk users to converse with others in remote locations, in addition to sending text messages."
This is big news and really ups the ante in the email-IM-communications battle that Google is having with Yahoo, AOL, MSN and eBay/Skype.

Google Talk To Interoperate With AIM

As one element of the finalized deal between Google and AOL. the Google talk (gtalk) instant messaging solution will become interoperable with AIM: from AOL and Google Formalize Partnership to Include Shared Selling of Ads - New York Times by Saul Hansell Notably, AOL will allow users of Google's new Google Talk instant messaging system to chat with users of AOL's messaging network, the largest in the country. Until now, AOL has resisted linking its system with those run by its major rivals - including Yahoo and Microsoft, which recently agreed to link their own. It does connect to Apple Computer's message system and several services aimed at corporate users. There will be a somewhat complex procedure to link the two systems, however. Google Talk users will need to add an AOL screen name to communicate with other AOL users. Bah, that's not complicated. That's what we do already with iChat. This will open the door to all sorts of interesting cross-pollination, like the IM presence of the senders of Gmail. Sure, Google could have tried innovating these sorts of things with Gtalk, prior to the integration, but the user base is infinitesimal. All of a sudden, logging into Gtalk or other services in Google -- for email, search history, or any thing else -- could lead to all sorts of presence information about the millions of AIM users out there

Conference CallsWhat you need to do to have conference calls: Open up a copy of Google Talk on all computers with which you wish to conference. After one copy is opened make a new shortcut for Google Talk but at the end of it add /nomutex. If you installed it to the default folder then your shortcut should read "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe" /nomutex. Open 2 instances of the software on every user's computer. After this start a chain: User 1 should connect on one instance to user 2. User 2 will connect on his second instance to user 3. User 3 will connect using his second instance back to user 1. With this chain everyone is connected to everyone.

TALK FOR FREE WITH GTALK

Google Talk is a free and easy way to make voice calls and send instant messages. This down loadable Windows application makes real-time communications possible. Once you've installed Google Talk on your computer, sign in with your Gmail user name and password. Your Gmail contacts will automatically be included in your Google Talk Friends list, so you can call and chat with your mates once they install Google Talk, too.
All you need to make calls with Google Talk is a Gmail address, an internet connection, a microphone, and a speakerwhich is cheap. That's it! Your mates can be any where in the world, and you can talk for as long as you want. All calls are free, and the voice quality is excellent (for optimal voice quality, I recommend a headset). Google Talk also does everything the Gmail Notifier used to do, and can show notifications for new messages in your Gmail account, as well as for incoming calls or chats.
The windows application uses software that uses Jabber for chatting
